Off Again!

 Tomar, Fatima, Coimbra then north to Porto and Santiago de Compostela


Before I start posting I thought I had best clarify what my plans are.  The Camino Portuguese begins in Lisbon, heading north to Santiago de Compostela.  Though quite a few people start there, many more start at Porto, which is roughly the half way point.

I will spend a few days exploring Lisbon, before beginning to walk.  I plan to begin in Tomar, walk west into Fatima, another pilgrimage destination, and from there head north to Coimbra along the Carmelite Way, before picking up the Camino.  Both Tomar, and Coimbra, a university town, are old medieval towns, and I am looking forward to exploring them.  From Coimbra I continue north to Porto, and it is here that I will meet my friend Julie.  Together we will walk to Santiago de Compostela, taking the detour / variant known as the Espiritual Variant.  This is the plan at the moment, but it is dependant on many factors - health, fitness, and weather to name a few.

Santiago de Compostela

Well we made it!  Blown in by a fierce wind, managing to shelter from the pelting rain under verandahs and bridges.  It was lovely walking into Santiago again.  The old town really is a wonderful place. Not raining yet, but blowing a gale  Once we left our accommodation in O Milladoiro we headed up hill to rejoin the path.  Here we met Sharn, and we  headed off together.  The streams we passed were running a banker with overnight rain, with the path moving through the last 8 kilometres primarily through natural bush like settings.  It wasn't until the last few kilometres that we reached more urban areas.  The wind, and weather report in general, was such that the authorities closed Almeda Park.   This was disappointing, as I had planned to take Julie and Sharn through the park on the way into town.  However since then Julie and I have visited the park. The last two stages into Porto.

The last two stages into Porto were either, two comfortably shorter days, or a long, more difficult stage.  The biggest difficulty being that accomodation is scarce for dividing it into stages.  An interesting sculpture on the outskirts of São João  In the industrial area, leaving São João  An impressive church on the outskirts of São João.  Saw George for the first time on this day. I have been thwarted taking a photo of the public labour (laundry) as a couple of good ones had people actually doing the washing in them, and I thought that wasn't very polite.   Someone has obviously been washing here at this one. This is what, I assume, is the Portuguese equivalent of the Galician horreo.  Starting to see a lot of them. Pontevedra

We are now in the lovely city of Pontevedra.   This was the place where had planned a rest day, which we have been enjoying, before heading on to the Camino Espiritual.  Plans have changed though, as the constant wet weather has made that option very unappealing, and likely to be somewhat difficult, with muddy conditions along the way, and maybe even flooded areas. Instead our plans are to head up along the Central Route, the way we have been following since leaving Porto. Iglesia de la Virgen del Camino  (I managed to have a sing here in the afternoon).  We went to the pilgrim mass here. How have the last few days been you may be wondering?  As I write, I realise that I haven't posted for a number of days, so it is now time to fill you in.
